Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

Year 7 Geography Farm Visit - Stourton Estates

At the start of the school's 'frantic fortnight' all four Year 7 forms visited the Stourton Estates (Baumber), on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July. Students learnt about a variety of farming practices to support their school studies, with a specific focus on how the farm achieves sustainability and resilience. The trip also included:

-a deer safari

-a visit to the top of the converted water tower
-burying some underwear in 4 different locations on the farm to be able to compare different soil characteristics at a later date

-a tour of the Horncastle flood alleviation scheme near Hemingby, which complements their studies on rivers and flooding from earlier in the year.

We are very grateful to Mr Strawson for welcoming us onto his farm and giving up his time over the two days and providing such a detailed overview of the farm's operation.
