U16 Girls Football - County Cup Final

The U16 Girls Football team were in action at Sleaford Town Football Club in the County Cup Final. This was the first time QEGS have entered a girls football team into the County Cup and what an achievement for the girls to reach the final.

The final was against Bourne Grammar School and the match was played on the main stadium pitch, a fantastic setting. The girls showed some initial nerves which settled after the first five to ten minutes. Unfortunately, during this time Bourne Grammar School had scored an early goal to put them one goal ahead.

After the first ten minutes when the nerves had settled, the girls put in a sterling performance. They were competitive, they were solid in defence, winning the ball in defence and midfield but not quite converting the chances up front in order to secure an equaliser.

It was 1-0 to Bourne Grammar at halftime. The girls came out in the second half determined to convert one of the chances however, an unlucky bounce resulted in Bourne Grammar gaining their second goal early in the second half.

What was impressive was that all of the QEGS players responded positively throughout. Their heads remained high, they continued to challenge every ball and they certainly made it difficult for their opponents with lots of goal scoring opportunities that, unfortunately, didn't quite make it into the back of the net. The girls battled hard in midfield and defence, captain, Emma Eastham was denied a sweet strike from outside the 18 yard box which was saved by the keeper and tipped onto the crossbar unfortunately, there was no one there to follow it in.

The game ended 2-0 to Bourne Grammar, but what a match it was and QEGS certainly have done themselves and the school proud.

A special thank you must be made for Dylan Andrew who did an incredible job as linesman for the game.

This team is certainly one to watch, this was a very young side that made the final with the team being made up of Y9, Y10 and Y11 students, so this tournament is a stepping stone for next year and will provide the opportunity for the Y9 and Y10 students to compete again.

Well done to all that took part, be proud of yourselves, and we'll look forward to next year's competitions.
