Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

District Athletics Championships 2022

On Tuesday 28th June, 56 students (Y7-10), 4 sixth form helpers and 3 members of staff made the journey from QEGS to Grimsby to compete in the district athletics championships at King George Athletics Stadium. This was the first time QEGS had competed in this event since 2019 due to COVID. To put this into perspective apart from the current Y10 students (who were in Y7 at the time), none of the other year groups had experienced this event before.

QEGS were in division 1 against KEVIGS Louth, QEGS Alford, Caistor Grammar, De Aston and Somercotes Academy. The team were highly motivated to win their division and there was a great sense of optimism around that this could be done. All the athletes from across 13 schools took their seats in the stand and carefully listened to the organisers instructions. Within minutes the championships were underway with hundreds of athletics were competing in both track and field events.

It didn’t take long for QEGS to receive their first medal for coming 1st in an event, which was Lea Frick in the Y7 girls’ long jump event. After this, the stadium announcer kept updating the athletes and there become a common phrase ‘QEGS Horncastle first in…’ – the team were relentless. Throughout the day, 31 one of our students managed to get themselves a gold medal for 1st place. This was a tremendous feat to achieve.

However, QEGS saved the best till last, the relays. The last of the events, and with all spectators (athletes not competing), teachers and parents all watching on, there was no hiding place for the athletes on the track. Out of the eight relay finals, QEGS won five of them, some of them by a country mile. Some of our athletes made it look effortless, it was a joy to witness.

Despite some fantastic individual and team performances, sadly QEGS could only finish 3rd in their division, closely behind KEVIGS Louth and Caistor Grammar. All the students, staff and fellow schools were shocked we hadn’t won, especially after our scintillating performances in the relays.

Overall, 35 out of our 56 students managed to achieve 3rd place or better in one or more of their events. This was an exceptional achievement; a true reflection on how hard the students worked and how much talent we have at QEGS. Mr Cope, Mrs Wilkinson and Mr Kwee are extremely proud of the team.

Special mention to the following students:

  • Charlie Holland setting a new district record for Y8 boys’ triple jump – 9.26m
  • Chloe Fields (Y8) for winning all five of her events – long jump, shot put, 200m, 300m and 4x100m relay
  • Yemi Akande (Y10) receiving an award for ‘sportsperson’ of the event due to her positive attitude, outstanding performances in the 100m and 4x100m and for being a brilliant ambassador for athletics.
  • Will Coveley, Lewis Janney, Evie Brooks and Miles Galbraith-Rouse our 6th form helpers who were fantastic team managers for our younger students.

Harry Milne (Y9) who had a bad fall when competing in the 1500m. He suffered a nasty shoulder injury and had to go to hospital. Hopefully, his injury is not too serious and he is back playing sport very soon.
