Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

Celebrating 452 Years - From Charter to Coronation

Officially formed on 25th June 1571, when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to establish a grammar school in Horncastle on the petition of Edward Fiennes de Clinton, 9th Lord Clinton & Saye, Earl of Lincoln, our school has a rich history that now charts over 450 years. This spring we enjoyed celebrating another royal landmark – the Coronation of King Charles III – with a coronation badge designed by current student Matilda Bush.

Matilda (Year 9) can be seen proudly wearing the badge she designed for Horncastle Town Council's coronation celebrations. The King's Champion Francis Dymoke, who lives locally on Scrivelsby Estate, wore the badge designed by Matilda at the coronation when he walked in with the King and Queen carrying the Royal Standard. When you watched the coronation, you could clearly see the badge! All students at QEGS were given their own badge as part of the celebrations.

King Charles and Queen Camilla chose artists to paint the coronation processions and concert to capture the atmosphere of those special days. Former QEGS pupil Fraser Scarfe (featured in the first issue of this newsletter) was selected with Phoebe Stannard and Gideon Summerfield (alumni of the Royal Drawing School set up by the King) to paint and sketch scenes from the day. All the artwork produced will become part of the Royal Collection.
