Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

The Physics department consists of four teachers. One teacher also teaches Geology. Physics is a popular subject at A level with roughly one in three students taking Physics in year 12.

Year 7 students take a combined science course. Students in year 8 start Physics as a separate subject and by the middle of year 9 we start the AQA GCSE Physics course, taking advantage of the overlap between the KS3 National Curriculum for science and the GCSE course.

About two thirds of our students take separate science GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The other third take the Combined Science: Trilogy course.

In years 12 and 13 students take the AQA A level Physics course. This is a new course for 2015. It includes 12 standard experiments that students are assessed on.

We run help sessions every Thursday lunchtime for children in years 7 to 11.  The sessions are run by a member of the Physics staff with help from year 13 students who are studying A level Physics.

Physics is a subject that more able students enjoy.  Our teachers are well qualified and knowledgeable; we encourage students to ask us awkward questions.

In year 13, students are able to teach themselves one of the options that we are not able to teach during lessons, for example Medical Physics.  Whilst their progress is monitored, this gives an opportunity for students to demonstrate study skills that will be vital at university.

For the younger students we run a science club.  This includes elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In year 11 we have a trip to the Cavendish laboratories in Cambridge, to get students to think about applying for Physics at university.

We have a six inch refractor telescope that sixth form students can take home and use.
