Year’s 7 to 9 students follow the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3, allowing them to experience a range of activities and to develop their knowledge of rules and tactics. During Key Stage 3 students also have the opportunity to receive the accolade of Student of the Term in each activity covered.

All Year 10 and 11 students follow the National Curriculum at Key Stage 4, where the focus is to develop previous areas of activity while also introducing new activities which may prove to be lifelong sports. The department also offers the GCSE AQA Physical Activity specification; currently 39 students are studying this course.

At Key Stage 5, Year 12 and 13 students are given the chance to participate in a range of sports as well as compete in fixtures with other schools as well as undertake the Level 3 Sports Leaders Award.

PE lesson at QEGS

At lunchtime and after school we offer sessions for all our examination courses to ensure all our students are fully supported and prepared to achieve the highest grades possible. Furthermore, we have a mentoring scheme, whereby students from Year 12 and 13 are assigned to Year 10 and 11 students to provide extra support with exam technique and effective revision methods.

The more able students are given opportunities to help the PE department run extracurricular practices at lunchtimes. We also encourage the more able students to undertake a different role within lessons other than being a performer such as being a leader, coach and official. Furthermore, the more able students are recognised by the PE department and play in a range of sports at district, county and regional level.

The PE department offers a range of enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Term by term we offer an extracurricular programme to allow students to develop their skills, techniques and to increase their understanding of rules and tactics. From Year 7-13 we enter leagues, events and competitions to provide our students with many opportunities to represent the school in all sports at a competitive level. Throughout the year, the school’s sports teams are extremely successful when competing in fixtures at district, county and regional level.

Year 9 students who are keen cricketers are given the opportunity to go on the 3 day tour of Derbyshire in July; this is always a success trip which the students thoroughly enjoy.

In Year 10, GCSE students have the opportunity to go on a 3 day residential trip to High Adventure in Yorkshire to participate in road cycling, which assists them in the practical part of the course.
