The Mathematics Department, consisting of three full-time teachers, three part-time teachers, one Deputy Head Teacher and the Head Teacher, is one of the largest in the school teaching all the students in Years 7 to 11. The number of A level students taking Mathematics is one of the highest in the school.
Years 7 to 9 students follow the National Curriculum for KS3. Lessons are varied in style and content and many contain an ICT component. My Maths is used regularly for homework or as an aid to revision. All Year 10 and 11 students are following the new specification for GCSE Edexcel GCSE 9-1 2015
In the sixth form single and further mathematicians study for the Edexcel A Level course.
All our students are closely monitored and any requiring additional support and guidance are able to receive this through our mentoring process. We also run a dedicated drop in ‘Maths Workshop’ for Year 11 students to support their revision throughout the year and there is an expectation that Sixth formers seek help whenever necessary. This is also the case for students in Years 7 – 10; students are encouraged to attend the maths office at lunchtime where there will be a member of the department available to help and answer their questions.
Students in Years 7 and 8 can chose to enter the UK Junior Maths Challenge and we regularly have students who progress to the next round, the Junior Olympiad. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 can chose to enter the into the Intermediate Challenge and students in Years 12 and 13 can chose to enter the Senior Challenge, with many students regularly progressing to the Olympiad or the European Kangaroo. The department supports all the team maths challenges and enters teams into the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Team UK team challenges with regular successes.
The Maths department offers a range of enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Maths teachers regularly make use of resources such as Nrich, resourceaholic and Don Steward within their teaching, challenging pupils to think beyond the syllabus and improve their mathematical reasoning. We have also taken students to STEM events run by RAF Cranwell. These events have seen our students using their Mathematical skills to solve real-life problems that the armed forces encounter every day.
