TITLE

PRODUCT DESIGN (A LEVEL)

INTRODUCTION

This course has been designed to develop the student’s capability to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.  It focuses on:

  • Materials and components, their selection and uses in products/systems.
  • Industrial and commercial practices.
  • Wider issues affecting design decisions.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This is a two year course with three main study units:

Unit 1: Principles of Product Design: analysis of existing products.  You will need to be able to demonstrate technical knowledge and show an understanding of the wider issues that impact design.

Unit 2: you will apply your knowledge and skills to a design challenge.

Unit 3: A design and make project.

ASSESSMENT

Unit 1: 1hr 30 min written paper (25% of A level)

Unit 2: 2hr 30 mins design/written paper (25% of A level)

Unit 3: Coursework project (50% of A level)

GENERAL COMMENTS

This course has been designed to encourage you to take a broad view of product design.  It will provide an opportunity to involve you in practical problem-solving activities using a range of materials and manufacturing techniques.  You will be able to develop your creativity and making skills in an area that is of interest to you. This course is a perfect follow-on course if you studied Product Design, Resistant Materials or Textiles GCSE and will be run in conjunction with A level Design Engineering.

PROGRESSION

This course will enable you to apply for higher education courses in product design, industrial design, architecture and other design related courses.

ENTRY REQUIRMENTS

In order to study A level Product Design you must have followed a GCSE course in a Design and Technology subject and obtained at least a grade 6.
