Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

The department consists of 1 full-time and 1 part-time teacher. All students start with German in Year 7 and learn German for 2 lessons a week. In Years 8 and 9 pupils also have 4 lessons per fortnight. At KS3 students use the Echo course, which is supplemented by a variety of other materials. By the end of Year 9 pupils will have been taught all major grammatical concepts, e.g. the Present, Past, and the Future Tenses, as well as different types of sentence building via linking words, inversion, and prepositions. At KS4 the AQA course is followed, using the AQA textbook and kerboodle. It contains all the topics required to prepare pupils for the GCSE-examination and uses a communicative approach linked to solid teaching of grammar. Pupils will cover the following themes: 1: Identity and Culture, 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest and 3: Current and future study and employment. Pupils are assessed in all 4 skills at the end of the two-year GCSE course at either foundation or higher level. At A Level we follow the AQA syllabus. The A Level course covers the broad themes of social issues and trends and political, artistic and intellectual culture and includes the study of a film or a literary work. Grammar is an important part of the course and builds on foundations laid at GCSE.

Year 11 students and 6th formers are involved in mentoring students in the lower school, focusing on individual areas of concerns and support students in preparation for exams. Extra help sessions are offered by staff once a week at lunchtime in the form of a drop in clinic.

The department aims to facilitate a number of extra-curricular visits. In the past this included a G&T GCSE day at Bourne, an A-level day in Caistor (organised in conjunction with Cambridge) and an A Level day at Boston, which focused on the GDR.

We encourage a broader interest in the culture of Germany at all levels and films, magazines and books can be borrowed from the German department and the school library. We invite a theatre company every two years to perform a play in German and we have a long-running German exchange with a Grammar school in Mellendorf.
