Year 10 students at the STEM lecture at RAF Cranwell

On Wednesday 19th of October, fourteen Year 10 students and Mr. Bouic attended a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lecture at RAF Cranwell. This annual event is hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The lecture is aimed at students who are interested in taking up careers in STEM fields. The guest speaker this year was Abbie Hutty who is a Senior Spacecraft Structures Engineer with Airbus Defense and Space division. She is currently working on the European Space Agency (ESA) ExoMars rover project. The main mission for the rover is to search for life on Mars. During her lecture, she explained what it is like to be an engineer and she gave us a detailed description of how the ExoMars rover works, what its mission is and how it is going to complete its mission. At the end of the lecture, we had the opportunity to ask her questions (which several students did) and had our photo taken with her. Everybody involved thoroughly enjoyed the lecture as it was interesting to see what engineers do and how you go about building a rover that will go to another planet. We would also like to thank Mr. Bouic for organising the trip.
