Dear Parents,

A very warm welcome to everyone, especially the newest members of our school community who have only recently started at QEGS. 

It has been a busy summer with students heading off to Nepal as part of Global Action, to South Africa with Operation Wallacea and to Peru with Camps International. Our Y7 students seem to have settled-in well and survived the Big Year Seven Sleepover with a lot of help from staff and sixth form students.  Our Y11 did us proud with their GCSEs and many have returned to the Sixth Form along with equally talented students from local schools, including our partner school Banovallum.  Last year’s Upper Sixth set an impressive standard with some brilliant A level results and nearly all of our leavers have gone to university or enrolled on a training course.   

Whilst the students have been on holiday, the site staff have been busy decorating, cleaning and mending.  The main project we undertook was to improve site security and you will notice when you next visit school that we have new gates and a remodelled Reception area.  We have also embarked upon creating a sheltered area between the Sixth Form Centre and the Staff Room; we are awaiting some outdoor furniture to add to the brightly coloured sails which have been hung between the two buildings.

Thank you to everyone who has offered support following the call to arms we sent out last term.  I am sending home an extra copy with students this term in case you missed it.  The parent volunteers have already had an impact helping on trips and visits, putting up displays around school and making suggestions to help with generating income and reducing our costs.  Parents have been generous with their time and with their ideas and we were genuinely humbled by how much support came in.  If you would like to help and you have not yet been in touch, don’t worry, simply follow the instructions on the leaflet when it comes home or find a copy on our website. 

We have also decided to set up the ‘Pound a Week’ fund to try to create a fund that will help pay for all the extras that we think are important but our school budget no longer stretches to.  We appreciate times are hard for everyone; whatever you can do to help, we value. We have also found we can claim Gift Aid on money that is donated to school so we have registered QEGS for that scheme.  Unfortunately, we need parents to fill-in a form (it only has to be done once!) so that we can claim Gift Aid – I will include a hard copy of the form inside the leaflet about volunteering; please, please, please fill it in and return it to school.  Details of how to make a contribution to the ‘Pound a Week’ fund and Gift Aid can be found later in this newsletter.   In the meantime, until the School Fund builds up, we will still need to ask for help with things like materials in Technology.  However, our aim is to use the ‘Pound a Week’ fund to cover things like this in the future. 

We have been working on the School Development Plan for the coming year and I am pleased to report that Governors approved it.   I will include a summary on the website of what our priorities are this year and how we are going to try to achieve them. 

We have had our first meeting of the PTA and the amazing Challenge Award presentation evening.  The next PTA meeting is on Monday 9th October here at school in the Staff Room at 6.45pm, please come along and get involved – our PTA definitely puts the ‘fun’ in fundraising.  There is some more information about their Facebook page in this newsletter.

On Monday 16th October we will be having the whole school photo (weather permitting) and next week do come along to our annual Open Evening.  Finally, if you are interested in becoming a School Governor, we are having elections and there are details about how to get involved at the end of the newsletter.

Mr Randman is Head of Sixth Form and part of the Senior Leadership Team. Mrs Tomlinson and Mr Bouic have taken on the joint Head of Year 10 whilst Mrs A Bourn is our new Head of Year 8. Mr Cope is Head of PE and Mrs Blackburn has joined the department on a part-time basis. In Technology, Miss Hebden will be joint Faculty Leader and Mrs Lilliman is now part-time. Mr Forster has returned to Business Studies and Economics in a part-time capacity and Mr Ward has taken on the Leadership of Geography. We were delighted that Mrs Whelan accepted a position to teach Psychology.

The PTA now has a dedicated Facebook page. This will carry details of future meetings, events and requests for help. If you are a Facebook user please follow the link below and like the page to get these notifications directly to your own FB home page. Many thanks to those of you who already have.


200 Club

The 200 Club is now open. Forms are available to download from the school website and all pupils will be given a form to bring home. We are keeping the entry price the same at £10 and the prizes are as follows: 1st prize £40, 2nd prize £30, 3rd prize £20, 4th prize £10 and 5th prize is £10. This is one of our main fundraisers and the money generated helps towards funding our Challenge Award Scheme and other regular commitments to the school. Please download an application form from the school website.

Also, a recycling box is located in the main entrance. Please fill an envelope or carrier bag with the following items and put in the recycling box. Jewellery - gold, silver, costume jewellery and watches, even damaged items. Old/new & foreign/UK banknotes and coins - Any currency UK or foreign of any age. Gadgets - sat navs, games consoles and games, tablets, video cameras and cameras, mobile phones, iPods and laptops.

U6 Leavers

We are extremely proud of our A level students who have produced another fabulous set of results. They have worked hard throughout their time in the Sixth Form and these impressive A level results reflect that; a third of results were either an A grade or one of the prestigious A* grades. Just under a fifth of our students gained at least one A* grade within their three or four A levels. Damaris Bennett, Abigail Hunter, Aaron Hutton and Isabel Rushby led the way when they achieved three A* grades. They were kept company by 15 students who were able to secure excellence across the board gaining As or A*s in each of their A level subjects. The overwhelming majority of our students have secured their first choice university place or been accepted on apprenticeship or training schemes.

AS Results

Students in the Lower Sixth have been taking their AS exams this summer; the results are fabulous with almost half the results graded at either A or B; a quarter of all grades were As! Six students secured an A grade in each of their four subjects; congratulations go to Callum Bennett, Caleb McCulloch, Oscar Simpson, Joshua Smailes, Alekhya Tiruvaluroo and Rohan Varadaraj. This is an amazing achievement and says much about the attitude and work ethic of this year group. We are very proud of all the year group; they have set a very high standard and promise much for next year.

GCSE Results

Our Year 11 students have enjoyed success again this year with results of which they can be extremely proud. Over 40% of the year group gained 5 or more grades at A or A*; just over 70% of students earned their English Baccalaureate. Excellent GCSE results do not happen by chance and come about through the hard work and commitment of students and staff along with unfailing support from home.

Special mention should be made of Sophie Bryant, Eleanor English, Charlotte James, Oliver Jones, Gaurav Kakkar, Umair Khan, Vaibhav Mahajan, Danielle Miles and Hattie Needham who achieved A or A* in all eleven of their GCSEs. In addition, Ioan Clarke, Katie Ennis, Karan Gupta, Anna Hutton, Rayna Koshy, Ciaran McCulloch, Maya Nelstrop and Layla Sultan did exactly the same in ten of their eleven GCSEs.

It goes without saying that we are tremendously proud of every one of our students and for the fantastic contribution this year group made to the wider life of the school.

Pictured above are the U13 netball team who drew 10-10 with Banovallum last week and also a photograph of the U15 netball team who beat Banovallum 53-2 last Tuesday.


Year 11 Field trip to Anderby Creek
On Wednesday 13th September a group of 60 Year 11 GCSE geographers accompanied by parent helpers, 6th Formers and teachers headed out to Anderby Creek to conduct fieldwork on the sand dunes. Despite Storm Aileen having blown through the county overnight the weather was kind to us, even the sun made an appearance during the day. The students worked admirably through the challenges that the vegetation and environment provided, with the knowledge that once all the fieldwork data was collected they could then head to the beach cafe for chips and ice cream!

U6 Field trip to Lincoln

U6 Geographers took part in a field trip to Lincoln on Tuesday 26th September to identify changes to the city and differences between residential areas. This field work was part of the students' Changing Places topic. During the day the students were given presentations by a representative of 'Visit Lincoln' and by a local resident, which were kindly hosted in the Usher Art Gallery's education room.

Open Evening 2017



The Librarians are delighted that the Parents’ Association has agreed to fund the Book Buzz programme for another year. This scheme provides each Year 7 student with their own copy of a recently published children’s book at no cost to the student. All Year 7 students have now chosen their book and are eagerly awaiting delivery of the order.



The Autumn issue of Teen magazine has been distributed to all Year 7 and Year 8 students. Additional copies are available from the Library for students in other years. There are some fantastic books available to purchase at greatly reduced prices, many of which are on the new Key Stage 3 recommended reading list. Orders should be returned to the Librarians or can be placed online at http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/queen-elizabeths-grammar-ln9 before the deadline of 1st October. The school benefits by receiving commission at the rate of 25p in every pound spent, which is used to buy new books for the Library.


The Librarians will be delivering Library introductory sessions to the Lower Sixth during form periods in October. Content will also include some advanced research skills.


The new rotation of sessions will begin shortly and topics throughout the year will include the benefits of reading, interview skills and revision tips. All parents are invited to an evening of celebration for last year’s Duke of Edinburgh Bronze participants at 6.00 pm on Thursday 28th September in the Main Hall. All the students will be talking through their July expeditions. New students who would like to start the Duke of Edinburgh Award this year are invited with parents to attend this also.

There will be a parents’ meeting at 7.00 pm in the Main Hall the same evening for any student who wishes to start the Duke of Edinburgh Award.


£1 a Week Fund

Our ParentPay system has been updated and the opportunity to make a donation to the school is now in place.  You could choose to donate £1 per week and enter a value of £52, a middle value of £26 or simply a value of your choice.   https://www.parentpay.com/

We have also registered for Gift Aid.  If you choose to Gift Aid your donation, we will receive an additional 25% at no additional cost to you.  There is a form to complete which contains more details and can be found at this link:  Gift Aid Multiple Donations Form.  We have designed the form so that consent is given once for any donations you may make whilst your child is at school (it can of course be withdrawn at any time if you wish).

This year we will be featuring some guest lecturers, including Catherine Redpath, recipient of the student awarded "Best Lecturer" at The University of Lincoln.  Catherine will join us on the 31st October at 6pm, her subjects are Keats "La Belle Dame sans Merci" and "Autumn". 

Guest speakers for forthcoming events include:

  • Sandie Byrne from Exeter College, Oxford, Lecturer in English and Head of Lifelong Learning.
  • Major Kenneth Goran Albret, Major in the EU Peacekeeping Forces in Africa.
  • Alison Moore from the charity Oxfam.

Two vacancies have occurred for parent governors. This is an excellent opportunity to become involved in school affairs. Governors are drawn from all walks of life and, if you feel you have something to contribute, please don’t hesitate to put your name forward. A recent skills audit of the governing body revealed a wealth of experience. However, in some areas such as ICT, careers, legal matters, management information systems and health services, further support would be very welcome. It is important that we have strong and active parental representation on the governing body. If you are interested in being a candidate you should complete the attached form which needs to be proposed and seconded and returned to school marked "for the attention of the Clerk to the Governors" by 11th October 2017.

It is recommended that candidates supply a short personal statement about themselves for circulation to voters. It should be noted that an elected parent governor is appointed for a four-year term and may continue in post even though his son/daughter have left the school part way through the term of office. If nominations are received from more than two candidates, all parents will receive voting slips and details about the electoral process.

If you have any queries about the election process, please don’t hesitate to contact the Clerk to the Governors at the school. Parents, who would like to discuss what being a governor involves, are welcome to contact the Head or any of the existing governors who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.


The purpose of having a governing body is to:

  • help the school to set high standards by planning for the school’s future and setting targets for school improvement
  • keep the pressure up on school improvement
  • be a critical friend to the school, offering support and advice
  • help the school respond to the needs of parents and the community
  • make the school accountable to the public for what it does
  • work with the school on planning, developing policies and keeping the school under review
  • exercise its responsibilities and powers in partnership with the Headteacher and staff
  • not intervene in the day-to-day management of the school unless there are weaknesses in the school, when it then has a duty to take action.

Governors are required to contribute to the work of two of the four main committees, which deal with matters of finance, personnel, achievement & learning and wellbeing.  Meetings are usually held between 4.30 and 6.30 pm.  It is, of course, essential that governors take a keen interest in the welfare of the school and are prepared to play an active part in its public and social life.


Qualifications to serve as a governor

A governor must be aged 18 or over at the time of his/her election or appointment and cannot hold more than one governorship at the same school.

A person is disqualified from holding or continuing to hold office as a governor or associate member if he or she:

• is subject to a bankruptcy restriction order, an interim bankruptcy restrictions order, a debt relief restrictions order or an interim debt relief restrictions order;
• has had his/her estate sequestrated and the sequestration has not been discharged, annulled or reduced;
• is subject to:

- a disqualification order or disqualification undertaking under the Company Directors Act 1986
- a disqualification order under the Companies Directors Disqualification (Northern Ireland) Order 2002
- a disqualification undertaking accepted under the Company Directors Disqualification (Northern Ireland) Order 2002
- an order made under section 429(2)(b) of the Insolvency Act 1986 (failure to pay under a county court administration order);
• has been removed from the office of charity trustee or trustee for a charity by an order made by the Charity Commission or Commissioners or High Court on the grounds of any misconduct or mismanagement in the administration of the charity, or under section 34 of the Charities and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 from being concerned in the management or control of any Body;
• is included in the list of people considered by the Secretary of State as unsuitable to work with children;
• is disqualified from working with children or subject to a direction under section
142 of the Education Act 2002;
• is disqualified from working with children under sections 28,29, or 29A of the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000;
• is disqualified from registration under Part 2 of the Children and Families (Wales) Measure 2010 for child minding or providing day care;
• is disqualified from registration under Part 3 of the Childcare Act 2006;
• has received a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of not less than 3 months (without the option of a fine) in the 5 years before or since becoming a governor;
• has received a prison sentence of 2 years or more in the 20 years before becoming a governor;
• has at any time received a prison sentence of 5 years or more; • has been convicted under section 547 of EA 1996 (nuisance or disturbance on school premises) or under section 85A of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 (nuisance or disturbance on educational premise) during the 5 years prior to or since appointment or election as a governor;
• is employed at the school for more than 500 hours per academic year if wishing to stand for parent governor at the same school;
• is an elected member of the Local Authority (applies to parent and community governors only);
• has refused a request by the clerk to the governing body to make an application under section 1 13B of the Police Act 1997 for a criminal records certificate
• has been disqualified from holding office as a governor of this school due to failure to attend governing body meetings for a continuous period of six months
