Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Horncastle

The department consists of 1 full-time and 2 part-time teachers. All students start with German in Year 7 and learn German for 2 lessons a week. In Years 8 and 9 pupils have 4 lessons per fortnight. At KS3 students use the Echo course, which is supplemented by a variety of other materials. By the end of Year 9 pupils will have been taught all major grammatical concepts, e.g. the Present, Past, and the Future Tenses, as well as different types of sentence building via linking words, inversion, and prepositions. At KS4 the AQA course is followed, using a variety of textbooks. It contains all the topics required to prepare pupils for the GCSE-examination and uses a communicative approach linked to solid teaching of grammar. Pupils will cover the following themes: 1: Identity and Culture, 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest and 3: Current and future study and employment. Pupils are assessed in all 4 skills at the end of the two-year GCSE course at either foundation or higher level. At A level we follow the OCR course for the present year and AQA for the new specification. We use the Zeitgeist book for the A Level, accompanied by online resources. The present A2 course is topic based and includes among others the environment, foreigners and immigration, rights and responsibilities and technology. The new A Level course covers the broad themes of social issues and trends and political, artistic and intellectual culture and includes the study of a film or a literary work. Grammar is an important part of the course and builds on foundations laid at GCSE. The Zeitgeist grammar workbook is used to reinforce learning.
